Watercolours are perfect for creating soft muted tones with your card making and I’ve done just that with the new Altenew Paint-a-flower: Clematis Josephine. This card has a calming effect when using muted tones with watercolours, and of course, I heat embossed the stamp design first for easy watercolouring. With the colouring process, the looser the better and it helps to speed up the process!

Muted tones with watercolours: loose colouring
Heat emboss the Altenew Paint-a-flower: Clematis Josephine onto watercolour cardstock with Primary Ebony embossing powder. Once heat-set you’re ready to start colouring the image in.Â

I used muted tones with the Altenew Artist Watercolour 24 pan set to colour the image in. First, drop clear water into the flower you wish to colour and start to then drop in colour into the wet area. The clear water will help the colour spread and move naturally.Â

Muted tones with watercolours: assembling the card
To create the background, I added a higher concentrate of blue around the edge of the flower and heat embossing. Then pull this colour out with clean water to soften and fade the colour out. In addition, add some paint platters in blue and black to add texture to the background.Â

To finish the card off heat emboss a sentiment from the stamp set in gold embossing powder onto black card. Fussy cut/trim this out and then foam mount onto the card.Â

This is a fun card. I like the colors primarily; the background has more pigment than the blooms and somehow makes the pastel flowers stand out more. This is very creative.
