An alternative way to create galaxy backgrounds!

Today I have a fun technique to create galaxy backgrounds with your embossing powders. You know WOW! are known for their beautiful colour blend embossing powders, and it came to me. Why not layer them up to create a galaxy effect! So in this video, I’m sharing three different embossing powder combinations to create 3 different and fun galaxy backgrounds! But don’t be afraid to combine and make your own unique galaxy background!!

Create galaxy backgrounds with heat embossing: blend 1

This first background is the easiest and quickest out of all three cards today, all you need is two embossing powders! Start off by adding WOW! Clear ultra slow drying embossing ink onto a card panel by smooshing your pad down over the card. Next, cover this with the first embossing powder: Black Magic.

As this powder has a blend of colours and size of embossing powder with some chunky particles, make sure you heat set this from behind the panel so the chunky bits melt and not get blown off! Once you have embossed it all in Black Magic you might find you have some full patches of the metallics. If you want to tone this down, smooth your pad over the top and sprinkle Primary Ebony embossing powder.

Primary Ebony embossing powder is a translucent powder so don’t worry you won’t cover up all the metallic. To finish the card off, cut the panel in half on a diagonal and foam mount to a card panel. To complete the card, add a layered ‘handsome’ die-cut from PinkFresh Studios and add a stamped sentiment from Altenew Sentiment Strips 2 set.

This second background was fun to make as I experimented with a variety of different powders. After you have inked another card panel, cover this first with Primary Ebony embossing powder. This does not need to be a perfectly embossed background.

Next, with a metal spatular, you can start adding overpowers over the top, sprinkling the powder for a more natural look and heat set from beneath. It is best to use opaque or marbling (OM) powders as this layer well. The next two powders I used were Bang and Genteel (from the Riveria Trio). These two powders contain white chunks of embossing powder – these create white spots or stars in your background. They’re also great for adding some translucent colours over the top to add spots of colour you would see in a galaxy.

Again, use a spatula to sprinkle over Primary Lemon and Primary Fuschia Fusion. You do not need to add ink down first as you can heat set this from the back. In addition, layer up more Bang to add more turquoise to the mix. To assemble the card die-cut several circles from the embossed panel and layer up on your card with dimension. Next, finish the card with an Altenew Waterbrush Hello die-cut and another stamped sentiment.

Create galaxy backgrounds with heat embossing: blend 3

For this last card, I used some of the beautiful new Alexandra Renke powders. To start off with, cover a card panel in Kirsten’s Magic and heat set from beneath as this has some large white powders in it.  Next, ink the panel again and cover with Tschenny’s night. This is a Translucent marling powder (TM), so it will overlay the purple and layer to make a gorgeous colour.

In addition, using a metal spatula, I also sprinkled some Galaxy Glow powder in to add a little sparkle and magic in the dark. Now when I heat setting this, as I had a few layers, I could allow the powder to melt and keep the heat on it a little longer to move the powder around. This marbles the white and creates fun looks to create distant galaxies in your skies.

To assemble the card, I use a Waffle Flowering Layering Rectangle A5 die to die-cut a panel out and foam mounted this onto a card panel. To finish the card, I added a layered Catherine Pooler Miss you die-cut and a stamped sentiment. All three cards were also finished off with a few Chalkstick Nuvo Vintage drops.
