Creating the glitter ombre
To start with, die cut the dragonfly die from Technique Tuesday out of white cardstock Next, to add the embossing glitter, apply some repositionable adhesive tape to a strip of scrap card. This gives you a way to handle the intricate die cuts and heat emboss several in one go.
Start by squishing the die cuts into our Clear Ultra Slow Drying embossing pad, only covering half of the die cuts with ink. Next, cover this with Pacific Wave embossing glitter, however, don’t cover the whole die in the glitter as we will add another two colours further along the wing to create the ombre look. Heat setting the powder with your heat gun, and repeat the process of smooshing the wings into the ink pad, cover with powder and then heat set again. This increases the dimension and allows you to get a better texture on the die cut.
Once 3 layers of Pacific Wave have been added, smoosh the die cuts back onto the pad, but this time covering the area where there is currently no powder. For next colour, use Whirlpool. This is a paler blue with lighter flecks of glitter in. When adding this powder, overlap the colour with the Pacific wave. When you add heat, this will melt into the Pacific wave and blend, creating a smooth Ombre effect. Again, repeat this 3 times to build up the dimension and to improve the blend between the two colours. For the last colour, add the ink to the tips of the wings and using Totally Teal embossing glitter.
Emphasizing the shine!
Embossing glitter can have a rougher texture to it that regular embossing powder. Now, you can always keep it like this, but for this delicate dragonfly, I wanted a smooth finish. There is one easy way to achieve this – to use clear gloss embossing powder over the top.
So as before, smoosh the wings into your ink pad, cover with the clear gloss and heat setting this. After repeating this 3 times, you will get a lovely smooth and shiny finish to the wings, and it really emphasises the shine from the glitter.
For the body, triple emboss this with Primary Ebony embossing powder. This is glossy so the shine matches the wings really well.
Creating the background
To create the background of the card, use a selection of alcohol inks on White Yupo cardstock. First of all, lay down some blending solution, which acts in a similar way that water does for watercolour paints. The first colour I used was Flamingo and used a straw to blow the ink around the paper. The next colour I added was Intrigue which is one of the Alcohol pearl inks and then used wild plum.
The last colour used was Indigo, and this is quite a concentrated vibrant colour. So try and tone this down, tilt the paper downwards to remove some of the colour and adding the blending solution of the top to dilute the colour. This reduces its intensity. Keep going backwards and forwards between the colours and blending solution as well as using the straw, moving the inks around until your happy with the design.
Assembling the card
For the sentiment, stamp a sentiment from the Inspired Dragonfly stamp set from Technique Tuesday in clear ultra slow drying embossing ink onto black cardstock. Cover this with Opaque bright white embossing powder from WOW and heat set.
The alcohol ink background was trimmed down slightly and added to a 5×7 white card base with fun foam for dimension. The sentiment was trimmed down into a strip and adhere to the front of the card. To adhere the dragonfly down, use Gina K connect glue to apply the dragonfly onto the front. Lastly, finish the card off with a few Ebony black and Caribbean Ocean Nuvo drops.
The smooth shiny glitter embossed wings of the dragonfly are the main focal point of this card, despite the colour alcohol ink background. I hope I’ve inspired you to try creating your own Ombre glitter embossed die cuts.

Very pretty
You did a beautiful job with that dragonfly. I love glitter embossing powders and this is a fantastic way to use it! Thank you!
Your card is just fabulous with the two different techniques you’ve used & explained so well in your video. I love the gradation of the embossing powders on the wings & I appreciate showing the tip on how you held the wings in place whilst embossing them. I think WOW makes the best powders & colours. Alcohol inks & watercolours provide the most interesting backgrounds – I love them both. Thanks!
