Upcycling: Clutter Boxes

Hope you had a fabulous week! I have a great upcycling post today to make these ever so slightly chabby chic clutter boxes. As you can see below, these boxes were always intended as ‘clutter boxes’, keeping your keys and coins tidy. However, I really didn’t like the colour or the design of them. I picked these up very cheaply in a store in France, but I’ve only just got round to upcycling them. So if you are ready, lets get started!

Materials required for Upcycled clutter boxes:

  • Small wooden boxes. It doesn’t matter if they have a design on them.
  • Sand paper
  • Chalk paint
  • Brush
  • Removable vinyl
  • Silhouette Cameo, mat and Studio software
  • Transfer paper
  • Scraper to burnish with.
  • Make-up sponge
For links to some of these products, see the end of the post.

Upcycled clutter boxes details

First of all, you will want to sand the boxes down. This has two purposes. Firstly, it will remove any unwanted designs that they may have. Secondly, you will want a smooth a surface as you possible can to prevent and bleeding with your stencil. Once sanded, and the dust cleaned off, paint your boxe giving several even coats. For a slightly chabby chic look you may wish to sand the edges down a little so the underlying paint shows through.

Design your stencil in the Silhouette Studio and cut this out in your vinyl. You will need to transfer your stencil to your box and burnish well with your scraper. To prevent bleeding, apply a very light coat of paint with your sponge –  it is almost as though your are dry brushing the paint on. Gently keep applying layers of paint until you are happy with the coverage. When you are ready, gently peel back your stencil to reveal your finished look.

Did you like this project? Why not pin it and save for later? It will be there for when you need it!
