In today’s video, I have 3 cards where I’m combing colouring blocking with heat embossing. Colour blocking is a great way to add colour to your heat embossing quickly and without too much fuss spending hours colouring in. If you love to colour in, that’s fine, but for a quick alternative when time isn’t on your side, colour blocking works just as well.
PRODUCED AS PART OF MY DESIGN-TEAM WORK FOR WOW! Embossing powder - SEE END OF POST FOR MORE DETAILS
Technique 1: coloured cardstock
The first technique for colour blocking uses coloured cardstock. Now, gather some scrap pieces of cards in yellow, orange and red to create a colour blocked background to heat emboss on. To start, adhere strips of double-sided adhesive onto a scrap piece of white card, and whilst removing a few of the pieces of backing to adhere the yellow card down. Next, adhere the orange card making sure the with differs and then repeat lastly for the red carstock. Once all the pieces are adhered down, use your guillotine to trim off any excess card that overhangs.

For this background, stamp the Spiral rose background stamp from Whimsy stamps in clear ultra slow drying embossing ink and cover with Super Fine Metallic Gold Rich Pale embossing powder.
Next, heat set with your dual speed heat gun to melt the powder and create a beautiful gold embossed background.

Technique 2: water spritz ink printing
You’ll need an acrylic stamp block, this is 4X3 inches Gina K block, but you can use any to hand that you have. Next, smoosh your pad down onto the block to transfer the ink. First of all, smoosh Tiara down followed by Orange Twist and then lastly with Samba ink from Catherine Pooler Designs. Once the block is covered in ink, spritz the block liberally with clear water until the ink beads up.

Keeping the block in the same position, place a piece of Distress watercolour card over the top. Keep the pressure on for about 10-15 seconds just to make sure the ink gets absorbed into the paper. Then lift the paper up to reveal a lovely blend block of colour. Once this is dry, you can heat emboss of the top.

You can use your dual speed heat gun on setting one to speed the drying process up and then place the panel into your MISTI. The stamp set used here is the Petite floral frame from Julie Hickey designs, as this a perfect size frame to sit inside the colour blocking. Again, this is stamped in the clear ultra slow drying embossing ink and then covered with WOW! Opaque Bright white embossing powder. As you melt this powder the white just really pops of the colourful ink-blocking we have created it.
Technique 3: masked ink blending
To start off, adhere a piece of white cardstock to your mat and mask half an inch at the top and bottom of the card with Heffy Doodle memo tape. Next, using the same tape, mask off a quarter of an inch vertical area on the card. To add the colour, use a blending tool and foam pad to add Samba ink to the masked area. It is best to use a heavy pressure at the top, and lighten this as you move down the area to get a graduated look to the ink blending. Once happy with the blend, remove the tape masking the vertical area off, and move the tape over a quarter of an inch to the left.

For this section, use Orange Twist to ink blend, again darker colour up the top and lightening the colour up as you move down. Lastly, repeat this step once more but this time with Tiara ink to add the colour.
For the heat embossing, stamp the heart from the Concord & 9th ‘All my love’ stamp set in clear ultra slow drying embossing ink. Next, cover it in Oyster Glintz embossing powder and heat set. This gives a tone on tone look when heat set, but as we’ve used a Glintz powder it has a lovely pearlescent shine to it in the light which looks stunning.

ASsembling the cards
To finish these cards off, add an Altenew Happy die-cut to the front of the coloured cardstock background along with a heat embossed birthday sentiment from Julie Hickey designs. The floral frame card used the sentiments from the Petite floral frame stamp set which heat embossed in white on black cardstock. For the last card, stamp the sentiment from the ‘All my love’ stamp set in white on black card as well.

All sentiments were foam mounted to add a little more depth and interest to the cards. Lastly, the cards were finished off with a selection of Nuvo Jewel drops in Strawberry Coulis, rosewater and limoncello.
