Hey there! Glad you have made it back to the blog today. I have a couple of great little Christmas cards and they are more on the modern side. I know a lot of people like quite traditional Christmas cards with the stamps they use and the colours too (red and green!!). However, not everybody likes this or to their taste, so I wanted to show a couple of more modern Christmas cards by changing up the colour palette and going more modern.
Both these cards didn’t take very long to make and you can easily change the colours to your own choosing. They’re both different in their own ways, but I can’t work out which is my favourite! Perhaps you can help me decide. So read on and find out how these two cards came together.
Materials required for:
- Tonic Nuvo Emblelishment mousse – silver, pacific teal and old navy
- Waterbrush and water
- Heavy white card-stock – you can use watercolour paper but go for hot press. The texture of cold press doesn’t work so well for the night sky scene.
- Black card panel
- White card bases (these two cards make 5″1/2 X 4″ 1/4)
- Stencil – I made the stencil for the black card on my Silhouette Cameo. To download that file, check out this post here.
- Distress oxide – I used Faded jeans
- Blending tool
- Christmas sentiment stamps – These are from Uniko Stamps
- Versamark
- Acrylic blocks
- White embossing powder
- Double sided adhesive
- Foam tape
- Christmas tree die – this die came from The Range.
- Scraps of colour coordinating card
Optional:
- Tonic nuvo drops – Morning Dew
- Sequins

Modern Christmas Cards - Trio of Trees card details
For the first card I created an ombre wash with the Tonic Nuvo Embellishment Mousses. I started out with the lightest colour (silver) and added a small amount to a non-stick surface. Using a palette knife I worked a small amount of water into the mousse to create a paint source. I added extra water to use as a wash and with a flat brush I added colour from the bottom upwards. Furthermore, I repeated this with the next two colours gradually blending the colours for an ombre look. When I first created the background, I was just experimenting and it wasn’t until afterwards I thought it could be a winter backdrop. I left this to dry whilst I worked on the rest of the card.

The tree die cut I used, cut out the outline of the tree. I felt that these outlines on their own got lost in the background. So I kept the inserts and swapped the colours. To assemble the trees I cut a small triangle just smaller than the tree. I covered the triangle with double sided adhesive and adhered the outline on top. I then filled in the gaps with the cuts outs from another tree in a different colour. Once complete, I adhered these to the background, foam mounting the middle one for added interesting.

The sentiment was heat embossed on a scrap of black card and mounted onto the background. The whole panel was matted onto the card-base with an “1/8 border. Lastly I added clear Tonic Nuvo drops to mimic snow. I purposely didn’t use white drops as I didn’t want to distract from the night sky.

Modern Christmas Cards - Falling Snow card details
This second modern Christmas card comes together in no time! I started by blending Faded Jeans distress oxide up from the bottom of a black card panel. I gradually faded this out so there was enough black left at the top to mimic a night sky. To create the falling snow, I used a confetti stencil and blended Silver Tonic nuvo embellishment mousse over the top.
The sentiment was heat embossed onto the card panel directly. However, make sure you blended distress oxide is dry before you do this otherwise you will get embossing powder everywhere!

The card panel was first matted onto a silver panel “1/8 larger before the whole piece was foam mounted onto the card base with an additional “1/8 border. Lastly, to embellish and to add depth to the sky I added a selection of sequins. I hoped for the sequins to appear as falling snow in the foreground and the stencil represents the snow in the background.
