Julie Hickey Designs & WOW! Insta Hop!

Today, two lovely British craft companies have teamed up with a fantastic Instagram Hop to give you plenty of inspiration using WOW! embossing powders with the fabulous designs from Julie Hickey Designs.  Julie also works on the WOW! creative team and is a pleasure to work with so make sure you check out her stamps over on the Crafts U Love shop website.

For today’s card, I used one stamp to create a beautiful floral banner design to frame the sentiment. It may look like a straight forward card, but there a few techniques in there to step the card up a notch, so grab a cuppa and let’s get started!

Creating with Julie Hickey Designs

To start off, using a blending tool and Juniper Mist Ink from Catherine Pooler Design, gently ink blend onto a navy blue card panel. As you move into the middle of the panel, fade the colour out so the edges are darker in colour. Repeat this step with Midnight Ink from Catherine Pooler Designs, but only apply the ink at the edges.

Also, apply ink the same way to a strip of navy cardstock which we will use for the sentiment.

Next, using your MISTI, position the floral image from Julie Hickey’s Spring Delights Floral Sprig stamp set offset to one side. Stamp this in WOW! Clear Ultra Slow drying embossing and the rotate the panel and repeat stamping this on the opposite side.

Cover the ink with WOW! Metallic Rich Gold Pale Embossing powder and heat set with your Dual speed heat gun.

Adding colour to your design

Using a selection of Faber Castel Polychromos pencils in colours of your choosing, colour in the floral images. For the best colouring, make sure your pencils are sharp. For the colours used on this card, see the end of the post for the supplies section.

When colouring on dark colour cardstock, I find it is best to lay a light base layer of white pencil down first. Then add your colours over the top and blend with white over the top. This allows the colours to pop against the dark colour card stock.

Adding the finishing touches

Stamp and heat the sentiment with Gold Rich Pale embossing powder using a selection of sentiments from the stamp set. To make the sentiment stip pop out more from the floral design and to frame the sentiment add some embossing powder along the edge. To do this, swipe your embossing pad along the edge and cover with powder.

Foam mount the sentiment onto the card panel with adhesive foam squares and adhere the whole panel onto a white card base.

Lastly, add a selection of sequins with Gina K Connect Glue and QuickStix tool to match the gold embossing powder. These sequins are from Lucy’s Cards Sprinkles: Glamorous Circles mix.
