Creating a scene on a vertical slimline card

Slimline cards are very popular in card making, but sometimes the shape can be a bit daunting when it comes to creating a scene, especially when it is in the vertical orientation. Well, today I’m showing you how creating a scene on a vertical slimline card can be quite simple and I’ve got a few tips along the way. I’ve used one my most favourite stamp sets from the new Nordic Woods release from Catherine Pooler Designs, which I also hope shows you that you can get plenty of different cards out of one stamp set!

creating a vertical scene on a slimline card: blending the sky

Start off by trimming a piece of white card down to the size of your card base. Here I’m using a UK size slimline card (4.125″ x 5.25), but you can adapt this to a US slimline card as well. To create the sky, start off ink blending with a blending brush Sangria CP ink about a third of the way up the panel. The bottom third will be covered by white cardstock later on.

Next, ink blend with Queen for a Day CP ink and lastly finish the sky with Juniper Mist CP ink, going back between the colours for a seamless blend. To add a snow effect, add some paint splatter with some pearlescent white paint and set this to one side to dry.

creating a vertical scene on a slimline card: making the scene

To create the scene, stamp and die several of the houses in the same inks we have used in the sky. In addition, also stamp and heat embossed in WOW! Metallic Rich Gold embossing powder several trees. Remember to use the coordinating dies to cut these out.

For the hills, freehand hills out of white card measuring the same width as your card panel. To add interest, add these to the bottom of the card panel with fun foam behind to create dimension.

creating a vertical scene on a slimline card: staging the scene

To create interest within the tall scene, stagger the houses up the card. Imagine the card is divided into three equally spaced horizontal lines, and position the houses around the bottom tow horizontal lines. In addition, create a visual triangle with the position of the houses and cluster the trees around them. This will lead the eye up the card and through the scene.

To finish the card off, and to balance the card visually, add a heat embossed sentiment at the top horizontal line of the card create a nice uniform appearance to the card.
