5 ways to use foils in cardmaking!

Foiling is a big trend in card making at the moment, but WOW! have been having fun with foils for a long time with their Fab Foil range. Today I’m showing you have to add foil to your card designs with several different fun fab foiled techniques. And you don’t need a hot foiling machine for all of them, so you can easily start foiling with a few simple supplies that don’t cost an arm and a leg. There are so many beautiful colours of foil in the Fab Foil range, so you’ll never struggle. And what’s more, the WOW! Embossing Powder Superior smooth cardstock is perfect for a smooth foiled design!

5 ways to use foil in cardmaking: toner sheets

WOW! Fab foils work perfectly with toner ink – so if you love digital stamps, you can step them up by foiling them. This card features two different ways to use toner foiling on your card.

I created my own sentiment on my computer and then I printed the sentiment out on WOW! Superior Smooth Cardstock on my toner printer. It must be a toner printer, as the foiling will not work with inkjet-printed items. Cut down Dark Blue Fab Foil and Turquoise Fab Foil to cover each of the sentiments.

Place the foil over the sentiments with the colour side facing up, and put this inside a carrier sheet before running this through a Minc machine or through a laminator. The peel and reveal is the best bit as you see the foiled sentiment.

For the simple background, I used Peel n’ Stick Toner Sheets from Thermo Web. I die cut three layers using the Notecard Layers die and then foiled each layer with a different colour of foil: Dark Blue, Turquoise and Silver. Again, these need to go through a Minc Machine or Laminator for the foil to adhere.

All foiled elements were adhered to a white card base with foam pads for dimension and finished with white Nuvo drops to create a simple masculine card.

5 ways to use foil in cardmaking: adhesive sheets and die-cutting

This technique does not require any machines or heat and is one of the easiest. You can buy double-sided adhesive sheets and then adhere to a card, you can die-cut from this.

Adhere a piece of Altenew Double-sided Adhesive Sheet to both sides of a piece of white card. Next, die-cut the Circle Weave die from this.

Peel the back release sheet for the die-cut and adhere this down onto a white card panel. Next, remove the front release sheet to expose the adhesive.

Cover the adhesive with Copper Fab foil and burnish the foil down into the adhesive – a bone folder tool makes this nice and easy to do. Peel to reveal a faux metal embellished die-cut.

To finish this card off, add a stamped flower from the Altenew Stunning Starflower set in Shea Butter, Sauna, Orange Peel and Mandarin Spice ink. In addition, add a sentiment heat embossed in Rose Gold Embossing powder using the Celebrating You stamp & die set.

Lastly, add a few clear bubble embellishments to finish the card off.

5 ways to use foil in cardmaking:adhesive sheets and negative die-cuts

There is no point wasting the negative pieces from the die-cut which will remain in the die because of the extra thickness the adhesive sheets add. Due to this thickness, it didn’t cut through the back release sheet, so this has already been removed with the positive die-cut.

Place the die with the negative pieces inside it on a white card panel. Use a pokey tool or bone folder tool to poke the negative pieces down onto the card panel. The exposed adhesive on the back of the negatives will allow you to stick the negative pieces down in the shape of the die.

For this card, I used two Fab Foil colours: Ice Blue and Teal. Remove, a third of the release sheets on the front of the negative die-cuts. Cover with Ice Teal and burnish down before revealing the foil.

Repeat this with the middle third of the die-cut using Teal Fab Foil and repeat for the last third with Ice Blue fab foil. This card was finished with another flower from the Altenew Stunning Starflower set in Clay Mask, Polished, Rouge, and Merlot. Again, add a sentiment from the Celebrating You Stamp & die set.

5 ways to use foil in cardmaking: double-sided tape

If you don’t have adhesive sheets, you can also use them with your double-sided tape and adhesive foam tape

Add strips of adhesive foam tape at a diagonal across a piece of Coral Hero Hues cardstock. In between these stripes, add strips of think double-sided tape.

Remove the release sheet on the stripes of the adhesive foam tape and cover it with White Fab Foil. After you burnish this down, remove it to reveal a lovely smooth white dimensional element.  Remove the release sheet from the double-sided tape and cover with Rose Gold Fab Foil.

For the flower, stamp in Serenade ink a flower from the Lush Garden Craft Your Life Project Kit and foam mount onto the front. In addition, foil a sentiment from the Mini Everyday Sentiment Glimmer Hot foil plates and add to the front.

Finish with a few white nuvo drops to embellish the card.

5 ways to use foil in cardmaking: bonding powder

If you didn’t know, WOW! have their own media to foil with: Bonding Powder. This works similar to heat embossing but the tacky nature of the powder allows you to foil it!

For this card, create an abstract design using the mixed median brush to apply embossing ink to a white card panel. Cover with bonding powder and heat set. As this heat sets, it will go clear but remain tacky for a period of time.

Whilst the bonding powder is tacky, cover with Violet Fab Foil and burnish down. Remove the foil to reveal your abstract design. This card was finished with another flower from Lush Garden Craft Your Life Kit stamped in Do-si-do ink.

Another sentiment was foiled using a sentiment that comes with the Glimmer Hot Foil System. These last two foiled sentiments were foiled onto WOW! Superior Smooth cardstock because this is super smooth cardstock which gives you PERFECT foiling every time! This card was finished with white nuvo drops.
