Distress Oxide Blended Snowy Night Sky

Hi there, I’m so glad you popped by! I was having a little creative block you could say the other day. Now I find when this happens, an easy way to get back to your creative mojo is to take part in some card challenges. In addition to using card challenges as a source of inspiration, I also drew on a technique I had seen on Youtube  by Kelly Latevola and I wanted to give it a go. This video helped inspire and create the Distress Oxide blended Snowy night sky. To see this video, follow this link here.flow is to enter some card challenges!

So today’s card is a result of two Challanges – Simon Says stamp with the theme of Christmas, and CAS(E) this Sketch! for the layout below.

distress Oxide blended snowy night sky Card details

To create the snowy night sky, I first of all drew a ‘hill’ on a scrap of white paper and cut this out. I placed this on my white-card stock with re-positional tape. This created a mask to blend your distress oxides off to create the snowy night sky. You could do this with masking paper if you have some, but I don’t.

Now, you need to blend Salty Ocean of the mask up onto your card, making sure you don’t dislodge the mask. The great thing about distress oxides are they are easy to lay down and blend compared to their regular ink equivalents. This doesn’t need to cover the whole of your card-stock. Next apply a layer of Faded Jeans, over lapping with Salty Ocean, taking this further up the card. Repeat this with Wilted Violet and Black Soot to the top of the card. It may look a little messy at the moment but don’t worry. Now going from the top down, take each colour in turn gain and blend over between the colours. This will help soften and blend the colours into a gradual ombre fade.

Creating the Snowy scene:

Here is the magic! Remove the scrap paper and you will have a lovely crisp snowy hill. To create the snowy background to the sky, flick drops of water over the oxide ink and use a paper towel to lift the colour/water. Because of the oxides ability to reactive with water, you will have small light/faded areas where the water was.

In addition you can add flicks of watered down acrylic paint, and watered Tonic Nuvo mousse. However, don’t lift this with a paper towel, instead allow these to dry naturally.

Once your background is dry, die cut this with your Circle die. I offset this slightly for the card because of the Sketch I was using. The Deer was die cut from a toner sheet and hot foiled in Gun metal with my Minc Machine.

Assembling the distress Oxide blended snowy night sky Card details

To bring this card together, I heat embossed the sentiments in white onto strips of kraft card, and matted the main sentiment in matching foiled strips.  To help anchor the Snowy scene, I matted this onto a matching Kraft circle. The background panel was dry embossed and mounted onto the card base. However, if you prefer you could leave this plain.

Next, the sentiment strips were mounted onto the card, and to emphasis and give further dimension the snow scene was foam mounted onto the card. To finish the card, I added a few Silver Nuvo drop clusters onto the white card.

Do you like this project? Why not pin it and save for later? It will be there for when you need it!
